When Jordan Glaser decided to take up a new hobby, he found himself at Brooklyn Public Library, unexpectedly flipping through the pages of S. Calhoun Smith’s book, Ice Boating: A Complete Guide to Ice Boat Development, Design, Construction and Sailing. He spent the entire night engulfed in photographs and text, and finished the book with a newfound determination—he couldn’t wait to hit the ice.

Huntington's Castle on the Bay

The Huntington Harbor Lighthouse, known to residents as the “Castle on the Bay,” had spent 20 years in serious disrepair, and in dire need of attention. With only a few years left before hitting the demolishing block, Janis Harrington, a long-time lighthouse enthusiast, rallied up enough support to form Save Huntington's Lighthouse, Inc. in 1985, a group designed to do just that: save the lighthouse and reverse the Coast Guard's plans.
